A Royal Affair

I'm a little embarrassed for the royal family. Please don't say anything because I don't want it to end up in the tabloids but I think our invitation got lost in the mail. I know Wills and Kate will be mortified when they find out! But just in case word gets to them in the next few hours, we'll be eagerly awaiting our private jet to whisk us off for Harper's debut at the palace. I'm sure they'll want her as a flower girl - but only if she can wear her tiara.
We celebrities always wear our shades
Oh, okay! Just one picture...

What's that Harry? You'd like me to be your date?

Ah, I just knew the Queen would want me to move in!

A little facelift

If you haven't noticed, I'm giving the ol' blog a little facelift. Please bare with me as I make some tweaks and changes over the next few days. It might look totally different from one hour to the next but I'm playing with coding and I've never done this before.

If you have any feedback, please feel free to offer it. Three columns vs. the original two? Is the new background too loud? Anything I should add or take away from the sidebars? I also realize the title picture and my columns are a little too big for the space supplied so if anyone has a brilliant solution to this or a helpful website to check out, please feel free to share.

Thanks for your patience!

Potpourri Saturday

Harps had a few visitors recently. I think she fell in love with Avery when he came to spend the night.

And it was so good to see Becky and Jennifer, two of our favorites from Harper's NICU days.

Our neighborhood pool opened up. Even though it's been in the low 90s, the pool is still a little frigid. This was about as far as Harper would get in. We tried a little more and got full on tears.
Come on Harper - can't you try to cooperate? I had this first swimming experience playing out in my head. You were in the pool in your float laughing away and I was looking like a Victoria's Secret Angel in my swimsuit. Meanwhile your father, looking like an Abercrombie model, was doing triple flips off the side of the pool. Oh, reality is never quite is what we want it to be!

We got to play with Field and Sutton while the Kelly's were in town. I tried to talk her buddies into teaching Harps how to crawl and stand up but they were pretty preoccupied with the toys instead. Harper was mesmerized by Sutton's long flowing locks. She's never seen such beautiful hair before.

Speaking of hair, when Harps is in the bathroom with me and I'm blow drying my hair, she's started reaching up and feeling her head. I think someone's getting a bald complex. I'm about to start scotch taping hairbows to her head. Would that be bad?

That second tooth finally popped up on Thursday but not without some trouble first. The Squirrel ended up catching a cold and has been a waterfall of snot since Tuesday. I think we're coming to the end of it. We had to take her to the doctor since I was afraid she was getting an ear infection. We were so sad that Dr. McCray stopped taking our insurance so we've had to switch pediatricians. This was our first visit with Dr. Neiheisel and Harper seemed to do just fine with the switch. The good news is that she's up to 16lbs 4oz and has hit the 25th percentile in weight! She's also 75th percentile in height so continues on her long and lean course. And no ear infection. Lucky girl!

I'm working on getting a little video of Harper's new tricks but she's learned how to wave and now waves at everything. She waves at people, the dog, the cat, the baby in the mirror, leaves on the trees, her bottles. I'm just chalking it up to her being super-friendly - perhaps a future politician? Geez, I hope not! My parents have a bell hanging on the wall in their sun room. She's learned to make an sign when she wants the bell rung. Harper's also very into kissing things right now. Her favorite thing to kiss is the baby in the mirror. A little narcissistic I'm afraid.

The Mom Uniform

It's hard to think that it's been almost a year since I hung up my heels and retired from the working world. I spent seven years in the luxury hotel industry a.k.a. formal work attire. That translates to seven years of suits, heels and, gasp, shriek, cringe, pantyhose! On my last day, Jared asked if we could take my pantyhose out back and burn them. See, Jared likes being in charge of laundry, but have you ever had to pull 6 pairs of pantyhose out of the delicate cycle so they can air dry? It takes about 30 minutes just to get them untangled. Don't even get me started on wearing pantyhose while on sales calls...in August...in the South. But enough about my utter disgust of nylon.

I still have a closet full of a few thousand dollar's worth of suits and work attire. Unfortunately, I don't see myself decked out in a suit while changing numerous diapers throughout the day. Since my casual attire, pre-pregnancy was limited to Saturdays and Sundays and since I was pregnant and post-pregnant for a large portion of the last twelve months, I'm trying to figure out my new "work" attire. I didn't mind that my pre-baby jeans sat a little low but now that I find myself bending down to someone below knee level every 5 minutes, the a** crack moments aren't so attractive. And now that I will, most likely, have some type of drool, food or spit-up smeared on my clothes by the end of the day, my oh-so-cute dry clean only tops have now moved to the back of my closet. Since my new job and title requires a little adjusting from my pre-baby attire, I'm now in search of my "mom uniform". Whether you're a full time mom or a working mom, at some point you have to step into functional clothing fit for taking care of those munchkins.

I've started taking notice of all of the different mom uniforms there are out there and here's a few of my observations:

The Capri: Something about a capri pant just has "MOM" written all over it. What is it about having a baby that makes you feel like pants must be cut for a possible flood at any time? Don't get me wrong, I've been known to throw on these weather-versatile pantaloons myself but a closet should consist of a few pairs of pants that skim the ground.

The Faux Work-out Look: This one is tricky. There are women in this attire who are actually going to the gym. If this is the case, the outfit probably doesn't match and they most likely don't have make-up on. When the outfit matches, from visor to tank top to pull over light-weight jacket to running skirt to socks, and they smell like Cabotine then it is purely an illusion. I have been known to try to pull this one off and it is quite enticing. Very comfy, practical and you don't even have to shower in the morning. However, I've found that you end up feeling a bit....hmmmm, incomplete by the end of the day.

The "Why Of Course I Go To The Salon Everyday" Look: So I'm sure you have a friend that looks amazing every time you see them...and they just gave birth, like, a week ago. Her hair is always styled, her make-up is flawless, she has on the latest fashion trend because she makes time to catch up on her monthly subscription to InStyle. Nails, oh they, too, are freshly manicured and pedicured. She wouldn't be caught dead in a t-shirt and can pull off a jumpsuit like nobody's business. She sports things like the latest Tory tunic, DVF wrap dresses, metallic during the daytime and clothes that would be horribly wrinkled without some serious pressing. And she manages to hold a baby throughout the day without adding said wrinkles to that oh-so-trendy outfit. Personally, I'd like to throw a mudpie at that darling girl when she walks in the room. How can you manage to look so perfect ALL THE TIME?!?!? Clearly, not my category.

The Lilly: As in Lilly Pulitzer. Yes, she is DECKED OUT in Lilly Pulitzer from head to toe and looking like the Easter Bunny threw up on her. I find that women who go for the Lilly look are often still sporting the Clinique lipstick color that they were told looks great on them when their mom took them for their 7th grade make-over. Now a very particular type of woman can pull this look off. I CAN NOT.

The Budget-Conscious Attire: Her entire wardrobe consists of labels that read Merona, Mossimo and Old Navy. In other words, she does all of her shopping at Target and ON. Yes, I definitely have some experience living in this category. The problem? Not only do the clothes only last one season but everywhere you go, there's another BC (budget conscious) girl there so you end up always having a twin.

"Don't Mess With Me, I Know I Look Like Hell" Look: Most often a wrinkled t-shirt with some kind of throw up, snot or diaper excrement. This is often paired with pajama pants or whatever was on the floor when one rolled out of bed, cussing at the alarm, having had 2 hours of sleep due to one of the following: A) a sick child, B) a teething child, C) a newborn or D) being in the midst of Ferberizing. Yes, I can claim that I've sported this look.

So just when you have your uniform all figured out - you've stacked your closet with enough separates so that, even though you might wear the same clothes every other day, you pair them differently in hopes that it looks like a new outfit - you decide that you and the hubs need a night out on the town. You look to your carefully crafted closet and realize bermuda shorts, a J Crew boyfriend shirt and flip flops probably won't cut it at the city's hottest new restaurant. Back to the drawing board....and don't even get me started on bathing suits!

The Thrifty Easter Bunny

On Saturday, the Concordia Lutheran MOPS had their annual Everything for Children Consignment Sale. And wouldn't you know it, I saw the Easter Bunny there! That Easter Bunny is one fiscally conscious cat. Looks like he loaded up on some goodies for Harps.

So here's the low-down. The sale started at 8:30am. Amanda was in town with Sutton and Patrick so the moms and grandmothers decided to make a stop at the sale. Cindy got there at 7am to save our places and ended up being #7 in line. Amanda, Mom and I got there around 8am, hopped into our conveniently held spots (thank you Cindy!) and the line was getting pretty deep. By the time the doors opened at 8:30am, the line was wrapped around the building and these women had massive bags and some serious game faces with them. Mom and Cindy had been before but, needless to say, Amanda and I didn't quite know what we were getting ourselves into. So as we're standing in line, we start talking about what we might need.

Brooke to Amanda - "So what do you need?"
Amanda - "I don't really know but I'm starting to get a little anxious. I feel unprepared. What do you need?"
Brooke - "I don't know. Maybe an umbrella stroller. I don't really need much of anything but I'm starting to get anxious too."

Have you ever seen footage from Filene's Running of the Brides? I don't know what's crazier, bridezillas on the hunt for the perfect dress or parents on the hunt for a deal. After what I saw on Saturday, I'm leaning towards the latter. The doors open to a gymnasium filled toys, strollers, playsets, clothes, clothes and more clothes, books, potties, swings, exersaucers, jumperoos, I could go on and on. It was totally overwhelming. There was a stampede and I quickly realize I'm going to be taken out if I don't start moving immediately!

I beeline for the strollers and nab a Peg-Perego Stoller - normally $200 and I got it for $30 - score! Then I turned around and saw a doll with all the baby accessories, still in its packaging for $9 and I started thinking Easter. Then I think I blacked out. By the time I walked out of there, I had a stroller, a giant foam floor mat, a pushcart, a second pushcart, a mini tri-cycle, a wooden five-sided activity box, a hooded baby pool, a baby with accessories, two soft books, a baby gate and a play piano. And I'm not kidding when they said they had a flatbed cart that I could load up with my purchases. Now to my defense, I spent $150 and Easter is done! The flatbed trailer also helped carry my mom's purchases - I think she blacked out too. But I will admit that I walked in to the house and did not make eye contact with my husband as I unloaded my finds. Harper might need an Easter basket the size of a car.

So in conclusion, I'd like to recommend the Concordia MOPS Everything for Children Sale...but don't forget your wrestling pads. You're sure to need them when you run in to me and that must have item that stands between us!

Harper loves her new activity box
Just a few of the smaller purchases - post Clorox wipe down
The car was pretty tight with the new found treasures

Tooth #2

Ugh, have I said before how much I hate teeth? And from the looks of it, I'm not the only one in the Meabon household who feels this way.
Yes, that would be drool....oceans and oceans of snot and drool.

Viva Fiesta!

Over the last two weeks, San Antonio has been celebrating Fiesta. With parades, parties and festivals, it's almost overwhelming to decide what to attend. Having an 8 month old also limits your options a bit. So to celebrate her first Fiesta, we took Harper to the King William Fair yesterday. She loved the people and the activity but, as you can see, was a little exhausted by it all. I can only imagine that our Fiesta experiences will get bigger and bigger with every year so we're happy we started small this year. We can only go up from here!
Viva Fiesta!
Arriving at King William

Lots of people and activity

The neighborhood was decorated for the festivities

I love some fair food but is this necessary???

Look! There were Rooneys everywhere!

Harper enjoying the fair. Oh, wait. Take a closer look.

But we kept going. Nothing wrong with an afternoon nap in the stroller!

And we got to play with Sutton, Amanda and Patrick who were in from Dallas.

Free at last, free at last! Thank God Almighty, I'm free at last!

Okay, so maybe using the historic and timeless words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a little tacky when I'm referencing my boobs but what can I say? The pump is officially retired!...at least until another Meabon baby decides to come into this world. I have to say I am not missing that wheomp-wheomp-wheomp sound throughout my day and I suddenly have 30 minutes every 4 hours where I don't have to have milk squirting out of my chest. Wahoo!

My goal was originally 6 months but since that fell right at the end of cold and flu season, I pushed through two more months. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been cutting out a pump slowly and mixing formula with b-milk in Harper's bottles to get her use to the transition. Its been fairly painless and, as of now, I'm just doing one feeding every other morning. I should be able to officially retire the boobs in the next week.

Unfortunately, Harps doesn't seem to be as big of a fan of the formula. And I don't blame her! Have you tasted breast milk? Oh, come on, don't act like you haven't had a drip slide down your finger and out of curiosity you stuck it on your tongue. The stuff is like sugar water! And no, I'm not one of those "people" that has been flavoring my coffee with the liquid gold...or making butter out of it like that freak-show chef in New York. So the girl is working on choking down the powdered stuff.

And while I am so happy to not be a slave of the pump, I am feeling more torn about this transition than I thought I'd be. I've been so happy that I've been able to keep Harper on full b-milk for 8 months. A year ago, I wasn't even sure if I'd be producing due to the fact that I had a breast reduction. But that I could produce and have enough for 8 long months was such a blessing. Harps had that small episode with RSV and I truly believe it would have been much worse had she not still been on breast milk. Other than that, she's been cold and illness free and I contribute it to that mighty Mama's milk.

I hope that with future babies, I'm just as lucky that they can tolerate my milk and I can produce enough. I'm equally as hopeful that future babies will be able to straight breast feed and I won't have to pump almost everything they take. I might have convinced myself to make it to the one year mark if it hadn't been for that damn pump!

So I look forward to welcoming the new, ummm, deflated lumps that will greet me. Maybe they won't look as good in a bathing suit and maybe I will be able to hold a pencil (or five) underneath them due to their new-found gravity pull but I'm happy and proud to have been an 8 month member of the cow club! I'd like my medal now please.

We love the park!

Okay Field, you ready? Hold on tight while we ride to the park.

Alright Harper! This looks like its gonna be fun.

Look swings! Let's go try them out.
Um, what do you think?

Hmmm, not quite sure yet...

Oh wait, this is great!

I'm having so much fun too!

The park is the BEST!

But exhausting.
